Cafiesencia Trees and Corals project receives award from the US Coral Reef Task Force
October 29, 2015 – During the 34th Meeting of the US Coral Reef Task Force celebrated at the Conquistador Hotel in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, the non-profit organization Cafiesencia received an award for the exceptional restoration efforts of the Trees and Corals project as part of the Guánica/Río Loco Watershed Restoration initiative. The Trees and Corals project was directed to women coffee farmers for capacity building in sustainable agribusiness and environmental stewardship at the upper watershed region where coffee is grown. The project that included a radio educational program for the watershed communities, exceeded all its metrics and helped consolidate the practice of shade grown coffee in the area. The project was made possible thanks to a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the partnerships of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez and the Yauco Municipality.
